Would anyone on the left support him? I think he would draw well from the middle, he is a great communicator. I heard him today doing the Paul Harvey report. He very easily and eloquently shot holes in the charlie sheen/mark cuban 911 (yes the govt did it!!) docu...what would u call it...a doculie?? I hope he runs...he is the only person out there I could vote for and feel good about it.

Fred Thompson could be a democrats worst night mare. Do believe that Sen. Thompson could pull voters from across the spectrum of Dems,Indy's and the right.

Time will tell. I'm hoping that he does get in the race.

Wasup is name recognition. At this point, that is mostly what the polls measure. He is more likely to appeal the the GOP bas than either Guiliani or McCain. National polls are meaningless now. In the coming months, polls in Iowa & NH will start to mean something. Those states have an inordinate amount of influence on the nominating process.

I loved him in The Hunt for Red October and Law and Order. And I like his voice. But I don't know anything about his politics. And I refuse to research any candidate until next year. The election is a year and a half away, for cryin' out loud!

Star power, same way Hillary is in the race. But at least ex-Sen Thompson has some governmental experience.

There's not a whole lot of republicans on the left. Republicans claim the middle and the right. Democrats claim the middle and the left. Leftwingers aren't going to vote republican. Rightwingers aren't going to vote Democrat. The swing is usually the independents, Libertarians and the Southern Democrats (who can be fickle and don't always follow their party.)

It's too early to draw any conclusions on potential candidates. I'm certainly not excited about anyone on either side.

I hear alot of the GOP base are sick of these neo-cons running as Republicans and Fred is the only one right now who appeals to the base. I love G.W. Bush, would fight and die for my President, but, man, he caters to the Left 2 much. We need somebody with the b*** to run this country like a man, the way Ronald Reagan did. But bcuz we do not have that it loox like a limp wristed Democrat will get elected. Watch what I say.

He represents a nostalgia among conservatives for Ronald Reagan. George Bush has accomplished what no Democratic president could have dreamed of - destroying the Reagan legacy.

I think right now, people are sick of Republicans. They are now the poster children for incompetence and corruption. They have managed to do in 12 years what it took the Dems 40 years to do.
Fred Thompson is moving up in the polls especially with the social conservatives because he does not have the "stench" most of the other contenders carry.
That being said, because of the Republican overload, He might win the hearts of conservatives, but not everyone else.

Your question started out with the statement that a man who is not running is actually 3rd in the polls. Think about that. Isn't that enough proof that polls are ridiculous?

I hope he runs, I believe he is the best candidate the Republicans have.
