I do feel that in comparison to both Roosevelts JFK was overrated. It is my opinion that he didn't hold a candle to Martin Luther King Jr. and was only echoing much of the mindset of his time.

Important? He fell far short of sooo many who are truly important.

If it were not for John F Kennedy, there would probably be nobody around to discuss why he is important. President Kennedy led this nation through the darkest days of the Cold War, and prevented World War III during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

President Kennedy also played an important role in the Civil Rights struggles of the early 1960s, and helped deepen US involvement in Vietnam.

Why do people answer when they clearly dont know the first thing about anything? "helped with ww2 or something". Buy a brain cell!!

JFK was aspirational, brave and courageous (more in life than in his job). He attempted to teach a nation to participate and be active in society, the Peace Corp being the prime example. He set about new ideas, his 'flexible response' foreign policy, the space race, the developement of the arts and sciences and education.
He was the first President of the Cold War to talk of peace and mean it,

"What kind of a peace to I mean and what kind of a peace do we speak. Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about geniune peace. The kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living.... Not just peace for Americans, but peace for all men and women. Not just peace in our time, but peace for all time.... For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet, we all breathe the same air, we all cherish our childrens future, and we are all mortal."

Mainly, he inspired a generation and was ripped from this planet too soon, leaving a hole of 'what-ifs' in his place.

Kennedy is best known for his handling of the Cuban Missile crisis when America and the USSR were pushed to the brink of war. The USSR gov. blinked first and agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba. His administration was called Camelot because he had a young beautiful wife, young toddlers and he surrounded himself with a young cabinet and advisers.

He was the second youngest and the first Irish Catholic president to be elected into office. He launched the space mission program, he bought about the issue of the Civil Rights Movement and made the USSR remove their nuclear arms from Cuba.

President Kennedy offered hope for real change in this country. The likes of which we have not seen again.

The promise of that change was stuck down by his murder. Ironically, however, his vice president carried out many of his initiatives, like the war on poverty, the space program, and the civil rights laws.

He is my favorite President.
