Why don't they just where the home and away jersies?

they added the 3rd jersey for sales to make a little more money. just like the Sabres getting their new jersey this year even though its ugly as hell, there number one sales this year do to being a brand new jersey.

need to find more ways to make money.

The 3rd jersey began to be used in the mid-1990s. On January 27, 1996 (just after the All-Star break), five teams introduced special jerseys (the advent of the alternate 3rd jersey) to be worn either on Saturdays or on special occasions.

Just a change of scenery for the fans and a way of selling more jerseys. There is no harm. I actually prefer alot of teams 3rd jerseys.

The purpose of the 3rd jersey is to add just a little more to the coffers of the NHL owners. Not a whole lot to it.

For marketing purposes. People would want the new jearseys and clubs would get more money. Cheesey but yet effective.
