As we have 10 fingers and thumbs and a decimal system, it only makes sense to start at 10 and go down to zero.

key word down
also 10 is an even number that is not too long
if people started at 20 or 25 or 100 do you realize how many people would have forgotten what number they are on ?
quick thought new years eve, time square, and the countdown begins 100, 99, etc 47,46, 50 oh wait....okay people we have to start again.
half the square would be torched by then and all the drunks would have no idea what number they would be on.
10 is simple even and accurate. nuf said

I guess a countdown can start at any # but it would always make sense to stop at 0. 0 is the end unless you want to go into negatives

Because counting down from 10 is easy because it tells the number of seconds before an action starts.
