That's just the way it is. There are a lot of silent letters, gnat, gnome, damn, phlegm, island, etc.

It used to be pronounced with the g in Shakespeare's time but slowly dropped out of usage. There are many examples in English which have changed over the years - knight,phlegm etc. If you are interested in American English or British English try Bill Bryson's book "The Mother Tongue" . Very informative and fairly light reading.

because along long time ago gnomes were spelled n-o-m-e and they were real and alive b/c they walked and talked and were found everywhere. their leader was a nome called Gigi-gagab and was greatly loved and respected. then a giant unicorn came and killed gigi-gagab by smooshing him under a stump. so the nomes decided in memory of gigi-gagab they would but a "g" in front of nome. but the unicorn came back and froze them so the were to be still for eternity and they couldn't talk that is why the g is silent!!!
