Aids in concentration. The more the ears have to be used the less the brain is capable of short term memory for the reason of it being used in hearing whatever's on the radio.

I do that so I can concentrate. If the radio's blaring I'm more focused on the song that I'm listening to than the address I'm trying to find.

because the music takes away from concentration. you turn it down so that you can concentrate on the numbers on the doors

I guess its just natural to turn down the radio, we automatically turn it down.
