Two books that really scared me when I first read them were
The Shining, by Stephen King, and
Whispers, by Dean Koonts
Alternatively, James Herbert's books are pretty scary. Enjoy! )0(

The Relic by Lincoln Preston. book is better than the movie and the movie gave me nightmares.
Or, as someone esle suggested, for really classic ghost stories you can't beat MR James.
Also, I first read Silence of the Lambs shortly after it came out in paperback; half an hour in and I had to go and check all the windows and doors and look in all the wardrobes. I read its prequel Red Dragon sitting in a traffic jam on the M25 (stuck for hours! scary enough by itself) and it had me so nervous I wished our landrover had proper locks! Hannibal is not so scary but even when i saw the films, they didn't scare me half as much as the books.
The original Dracula by Bram Stoker is very scary but a period piece some may find hard work; Francis Ford Coppola's film version was veyr good though.

This is a really good ghost story website, full of supposedly true ghost stories, some of which will, as you say, scare the begeesers out of you.
Or you could go to the library and pick up a collection of Edgar Allen Poe.
A good ghost story book, which isn't as scary as it is suspenseful, by Vivian Vande Velde, is There's A Dead Person Following My Sister Around. I love that book, I've read it like 3 times.
You could look for other things by Vivian Vande Velde, she writes a lot of humorous/romantic/scary stories.

Not exactly a ghost book, but The Exorcist scared the daylights out of me when it first came out and I read it alone one weekend babysitting for a family whose house was up in the middle of nowhere. God - I didnt sleep all weekend.
Peter Straub's Ghost Story is good, but he edited a collection of short stories called Peter Straub's Ghosts that was terrific. Pax - C.

Not a ghost story but the scariest book I have ever read is Let's Go Play At the Anderson's. I've read every King, Laymon, Koontz, Herbert etc, but this one threw me.

Anne Rice's Vampire books, and Mayfair Witch books.
Under the Skin by Michel Faber
Patricia Cornwell's book can be scarey as well, the earlier ones are scarier than the later ones.
