They will not hold your brother back because of a C, especially if he is getting A's in other subjects. He has nothing to worry about at the moment~ if he gets a F then he has something to worry about!

Getting a C means that he is going the average that is required for that grade level..
B- above grade level
A- outstanding...

No, he wont fail.

In California, parents need to know almost from the beginning of the school year (at least during the first grading period) if their child is at risk for retention. In other words, it cannot be a surprise at the end of the school year. The reason for this is so that parents and the teachers work on his improvement throughout the school year. At the end of the year, an evaluation is made to see if sufficient progress has been made or if a retention is more beneficial.

If he continues to stay behind, he may be at risk next year, but it's too late to retain him now. I recommend lots of reading during the summer so he can catch up :-)

I am a Teacher Assistant and a C is not failing. He just needs a little help with those subjects. When his last progress report came home if there was a chance he was going to be held back a retention letter would have been with that progress report. At the school where I work we have tutors during school hours and also after school hours and also a buddy system for volunteers. Contact your school system and see if they offer any of these and also talk to his teacher. Give him a lot of support, he is 7 and he needs to know that you are there for him.

Ahhhh, youth. Have you and all your friends and parents always gotten straight As? I doubt it.

For goodness sake he's in 1st Grade and you're his sister, not a parent. If he gets As in everything else maybe this is just his weak subject. At this age, I would suggest that he get an eye test or a screening test for dyslexia not a freak-out from his big sister about how this is going to ruin his life.

Focus on your own academic issues first, and if you really want to help him read with him and ask him to read to you. Write stories together and play things like Junior Scrabble.

Scaring a kid into getting good grades does not work.

no. he would have to fail more than one subject or just not be able to read at all to be held back. many 1st graders have difficulty reading at first. it takes some students longer to develop the mind for reading. there is nothing wrong with him he needs to just hang in there and keep trying. soon he will be doing great.

Getting a couple Cs isn't that bad, but it shouldn't become a habit. Never praise him for not doing his best. When he tries his hardest, then you may tell him how well he is doing. He still has plenty of time until grades actually count.

C is a passing grade. Tell him to buck up a little and double check his homework though. Almost NO ONE stays back in 1st grade. Trust me

I don't think he will be held back. The school may get him a tutor to help him along though.

no, he can not be held back. i would suggest that you try to find help for him before school or after. at that grade they tend not to hold back.
