Norman Pritchard was the first Indian athlete to participate in the Olympic Games. He was also the first Indian and first Asian to win an Olympic medal. He won two silver medals in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. He was of British descent and moved to England permanenly in 1905.

Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav was independent India's first individual Olympic medalist when he won the wrestling bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki games. Since 1900 when Norman Pritchard won 2 silver medals in athletics, India had won gold medals only in field hockey, a team sport. For nearly half a century, his would remain the only individual medal for India at the Olympics until Leander Paes won a bronze in 1996.

I think if India won their first individual gold medal would be great! Earlier today (in USA) Togo won their first medal (congrats!) in Kayaking, a bronze medal. I was very proud of the guy, he did a good job, even for a bronze. Although i'm a huge fan of Phelps, I do agree with you. Lots of American athletes have, in a way, bigger chances to win. Places like India, Togo, Romania, lots of poor countries don't get a chance in the Olympics like the US. Did you watch the opening cermony? 647 athletes from the USA, the most! And a small African country only had 2 :( In the news, Phelps would have a much bigger Olympic story. But I would like to see countries with less of a chance winning gold, silver or even bronze. xox- Julie

For what it's worth, Wikipedia reports India having won 20 Olympic medals. But your point remains. I attribute India's dearth of Olympic medals on its lack of nationalized sports programs, lack of social emphasis on sports (oddly, it seems to be education), and lack of sports leagues. All stem from India being still a relatively poor country in terms of GDP per capita, but it's climbing fast. The other factor is India's national obsession, cricket, is not an Olympic sport. I hear an abridged version of cricket is being considered.

I would have to say Jim Thorpe. All around athlete. I believe they took his medals away because he excepted $13 once, before the Olympics for a semi pro baseball game.
