I have a Windows XP. Up till this morning, it was working just fine. I shut it off before going to bed last night and this morning, when I pressed the startup button, it sounded like it was starting but then it went off. The startup button flashes periodically too, even if the damned computer is unplugged! If I turn the powerstrip off and then back on, then press the startup again, it sounds like it's coming on for a fraction of a second and then goes off. It won't start! What happened and what can I do about it?

Bad hard drive or Power Supply Unit?

It sounds like your power supply burned out. Hopefully this is the case because it's pretty inexpensive to fix. But quit trying to turn it on because it could potentially fry out your motherboard which would be a huge problem

Hi. First guess is a bad power supply. Right at boot time is the largest power draw from the PSU.

Well here it is sure that the soft part is not involved.
But i have a hint for you!
Think about when you start the computer the data from hard disk cames into the RAM and then it is used!
But what if your RAM is messed?Your data wont be able to load on RAM and your computer will automaticly shutdown!

It sounds like your power supply got fried. What type of computer is it? Is it still under warranty? Try calling the tech support number of the manufacturer and if it's under warranty they will repair it for you.
