is this head to head? if so..hell no. carpentar only pitches every 5 days..you want a guy who will hit and play every day of the week? or just one who plays once a week..and if he has a bad outting ..will lose you that week.
trading a hitter for a pitcher is simply a no no in fantasy ball. even if you have lugo (who i love and is one of my two sleepers this year)..u'd be silly to trade for chris..but with that said..WHAT THE HELL YOU DOING WASTING PICKS ON RELIEVERS.
i am considered an expert..and let me tell you for 3 years i did that experiment of just drafting relivers over starting pitchers..it doesn't work-i managed to get to the title games each year simply because i traded away my relievers over the season.. who ever's telling you it does work is wrong..it doesn't. it will help a bit in roto leagues..but not in head to head.
but with that said. it depends on who you have playing ss. lugo isn't bad at all to have at 2nd..but you could play him at ss (he qualifes in yahoo leagues at ss,2nd and 3rd) so if you have a strong ss then trade utley and place lugo at 2nd.
again what kind of league is this? roto? or h2h?

Bad trade...you are giving up an everyday dominating 2nd baseman for a guy who goes once very 5th day. Carpenter is a dominant pitcher but no way can you put him in Utleys class. If you need pitching then find the guys who werent drafted and watch to see who is among this years group of 10-12 pitchers that suddenly become very good. Last year I picked up guys like Liriano, Verlander, Putz, Sanchez, Josh Johnson, Arroyo, Harang, Bedard, Olsen, Kazmir, Chuck James, Rich Hill,Ervin Santana, Wang,Papelbon,Hamels,Sowers off the free agent wire....get the idea. Pitching is literally a dime a dozen if you do some homework, never trade a thundering bat for any pitcher. If you need a pitcher see who is weak at 2nd (since there are only 6 or 7 good fantasy 2nd basemen there are plenty of teams in need) or SS and offer Lugo for someone like Harden, Haren, Lackey, Chris Young, Bonderman or someone along those lines.

Let me first state this fact...Lugo will not get 20-25 steals this year...the Red Sox rarely give the green light to steal because of their sabermetrics philosophy (don't believe in risking an out to steal...Lugo defintely is not a gurantee steals guy). He will probably end up with 10-15 steals at most, however his other numbers should go up, leading off in Boston.
As for the trade, I wouldn't pull the trigger on this trade. Utley is by far the best 2nd baseman in the game and pitchers are more apt to get injured. I would look to package a closer (which you obviously can afford to give up) and another mid round player for a top tier pitcher like a Carpenter...or just trade a closer for a solid mid round pitchers mentioned by the other users.
On a side note: I never draft RP high because it is the most volitile position...it is constantly changing and there is always more than a handful of RP that end up as closers in the wavier wire (ie JJ Putz last year). I usually grap one solid closer in the mid rounds and then grab one or two RP for value in the late rounds (ie Chad Cordiero in 2005).

I'd turn it down and trade Lugo instead. He should bring a solid starting pitcher from someone who's weak at either second or short. You should be able to trade him for someone like Lackey, Sheets, Bonderman, Felix Hernandez or Harang. You also should have bench players you can drop if you have only seven pitchers total. Four closers is a good idea, but three or even four SP will hurt you. In h2h especially a large bench doesn't help. Even in a rotissiere league I think I'd only have two or at the most three backup bats. You appear to have five.
If you were to trade Utley ask for either two good SP or even up for Santana.

Okay may want to slow down when typeing otherwise you may not make very good sense.
From what I am getting at you are wanting to trade Utley for Carpenter. and you have another 2ber. You have 2 sp and 4 closers.
I would not do this trade. Your giveing away the best 2ber and a damn good player for a SP. (utley goes in the first round, Carpenter goes in 2nd) Stick with Utley.
(SP are a dime a dozen. Look into waivers and you can find a couple at any given time)

Ok again I'm going to disagree, don't do it. True pitching is somewhat hard to find, but you know what is even harder? A power hitting stud 2nd baseman. Chase Utley is a superstar, Lugo will not get nearly the numbers in steals that he has gotten in the past, so he is going to be a huge step down. Your pitching as is sounds solid. Your going to give up a 40 HR, 120 RBI .350 AVG and replace him with a guy who is going to hit .280 with 8-12 HR and 60 RBI. Don't do it.

If you have four closers I would hang on to Utley and trade one of them. Utley is too solid of a player and he will do well hitting in front of Howard.
Carpenter would help you but seeing as you have two solid starters already I would hang on to Utley and use a closer to get a 2nd tier starter instead (Verlander, Jared Weaver, or Schmidt).

Don't trade Utley. He does everything, unlike Lugo, who will primarily give you only steals. Instead of trading Utley, why not trade one of your closers for a good SP?
