Google Earth says 571miles and nearly 9hrs to drive.

No idea as I didn't drive as far as Las Vegas. I suggest you start in San Franciso and only drive south as far as the Big Sur on Highway 1. If you get the chance go North of S.F, up to the Giant redwood country. Very quiet roads, not too touristy as they are all going to Grand Canyon and Las Vegas
Fly into San Franciso and get car from there if you can....
