Get him the Ender series. Those are all good. Orson Scott Card is "generally" a sci fi author -- and just about any of his stories have a twist that take them beyond the realm of "average" or "normal". (I've read all of his books) Here, check out this Wikipedia entry about Card. There is a spot (blue box) at the lower part of the page that has the books and titles and they are grouped by story line.

The Ender series is the most notable science fiction series written by Orson Scott Card.

Send him "Ender's Game", "Speaker for the Dead" and "Xenocide". Those are the first 3 in that series, and I would recommend them highly, even though I am still reading Xenocide.
