though the book was 50 years old that doesnt mean that the prince was the first to own it. it may have been passed down or sold to snape 2nd hand. they did not act as if snapes family was very rich. the weaslys rarely get new books but they get theres from the used book section unless the book is new to the curriculem which we know potions was not.

Good try but, their right. The book first belonged to snapes mother then to him. That's why the initials didn't add up at first and they couldn't figure out who it was. Remember them checking to see who was really good at potions and a girls name came up w/ the correct initials? Then snape used his mom's book and made notes in it.

it's called Hand me Down. she was good in potions too, and gave her son the book. she had written notes, as snape did as well because he invented some spells

No, it isn't. The book originally belonged to Snape's mother, Eileen Prince. He got it from her.

yup. it was snape's mom's book.
because they weren't well off, the book was handed down to snape :-)
and i agree, the movies fail to explain a lot. just look at the 4th movie, if i hadn't read the books beforehand, i would have been completely lost!
