they had a row of candle type lanterns in front of the actors at the very edge of the stage...it illuminated the people.....

If you mean the first light used to illuminate a drama, it would be a campfire and perhaps torches. If you mean the first focused light, it was probably mirrors used to reflect the sun and brighten the actors who were in focus, probably used by the Chinese or Greeks first.
If you mean the first focused spotlight then it would be limelight. A light produced by heating lime to a very high temperature, usually with an electrical arc. I would have a reflector behind it and usually a lens in front.

Tough to say. There's evidence that the Greeks utilized candles or torches placed behind containers of water to focus the light somewhat, but it's really just conjecture.
Also, a slight correction: A limelight is a gas flame (hydrogen/oxygen mix) directed against a piece of lime. The heat from the flame makes the lime glow a greenish white. No electricity involved.
