So that everyone knows wha is expected of them and everyone gets treated fairly. In the ideal anyway. I have worked at companie though that enforce policies for some and not others.
Policies basically are a fair and easy way of teeling everyone how they are expected to behave and act while at work and ensures that everyone is on the same page. Otherwise, for example sickness policies, you may have someone who is off every monday and nothing is done about it. With a sickness policy, you company can investigate this and make it fairer for everyone, the person who is always sick on Mons and the rest of the staff who have to cover their workload.

A modern work place could not survive without policies being put in place.

Health & Safety at work;
Contract of employment;
Employee rights and legislation;
Customer care policies.

The list is endless and are a way of letting both employer and employee what is expected of them and how they are implemented to meet both government and company guidelines for good working practice within the workforce.

It depends what sort of policies you are talking about.

It could be to help with health and safety, or managing risk to protect employees in the workplace.

They could be employment-related policies which would help to ensure that all staff are managed in a consistent way across the organisation.

Or they could be policies and procedures that dictate how the organisation goes about it's business - again to help with consistency and to ensure all workers are doing their jobs in the right way.
