Newborns:
Blood type
hearing
PKU
possibly blood sugar.

If they suspect something is wrong then I am sure they go to town with all the testing that they will perform.

Thats all I can think of right now..

I dont think they test the mother for anything.. I think she has already been tested during pregnancy.

I have to respectfully disagree with the below poster about not tesing the mother for much during pregnancy. I used a CNM during three pregnancys and they all took several vials of blood routienly from all moms and did various testing.

Cut and pasted from another web site.
One-Hour Glucola Testing
Blood test for gestational diabetes. This type of diabetes develops during pregnancy and often disappears after the baby is born. This test is often done between 24 and 28 weeks.
MSAFP - Maternal Serum Alpha-Fetal Protein
This blood test is done between 15 and 18 weeks and screens for some birth defects such as spina bifida and Down's Syndrome.
RH Factor
If your blood is RH- (negative), blood will be drawn at 26 to 28 weeks and you will be given RhoGAM. RhoGam is given in order to prevent your body from developing antibodies to a possible RH+ (positive) baby.
Hematocrit
This is a blood test to rule out anemia (low iron in the blood).
RPR
This is a blood test to check for the sexually transmitted disease syphilis

They do a heel stick test on the newborn that tests for the most common genetic disorders. These include PKU, Hypothyrodiosm, galactosemia, and sickle cell anemia. All of these disorders are managable as long as they are caught early. Don't worry, they are all extremely rare and are genetic, so you should be able to chart them in your family history if your baby is in danger of getting one of them. As for the mom, there are really no tests done during pregnany except a glucose test to check for diabetes and a blood test around 18 weeks that checks for down sydrome and spina bifida.
