You can't just tape and spackle over it without some backing to support that much space.

I would cut the sheetrock from mid-stud to mid-stud, just tall enough to remove the hole, put a replacement piece in, and then tape the seams.

alternatively, you can insert a piece of sheetrock thru the hole and use it as backing. Tie a string to it and slap some spackle onto one side, then use the string to pull in against the back side of the sheetrock, so the spackle makes it stick. Let it dry there, the apply several coats of spackle into the hole til you get a nice smooth surface. Before you apply the final coat, cut the string off flush with the wall. This won't hold up to any amount of abuse though. and may crack, since spackle isn't meant to be used so thickly.

Find a piece of scrap drywall bigger the hole (many hardware stores will give you a piece). Cut both the hole and patch square (you can even use a piece you cut out of the wall to match the paint if it's large enough), get a small piece of wood- 2 x 1 or something similar, cut it bigger than the hole. Insert this brace through the hole, hold it in place, and put several screws through the drywall into the board (make sure you sink the screw slightly into the surface but don't break the drywall backing). Put the patch into the hole and screw it into the brace (use two braces if it's a bigger hole). Using joint compound, fill in the spaces around the edge of your patch with joint compound (mud)- use drywall tape if the space is larger than 1/4 inch. Sand, reapply mud, texture and paint- voila

I'm assuming it's hole in a drywall or plaster wall.
You can just put spackle over a smaller hole but in the larger ones it can be difficult to get it to stick. But here's a little trick someone showed me.
All you got to do is crumble up pieces of newspapers and stick them in the hole. Then spackle over the hole. The newspaper holds the spackle in place until it dries. Of course use a putty knive to smooth it over.
On the first coat, don't worry about getting it perfect. The spackling will probably crack or you'll see a kind of dimple in the wall still. After it dries (wait at least a day to be sure), simply apply another coat of spackling. Again, wait for it to dry and then sand it smooth. Be careful when you are sanding that you don't put to much pressure on the place where the hole was. You may have to put a third coat of spackle and sand again. It works great.
Good Luck!

There are several methods. A hole that size needs some support, you can get a metal patch that is self stick, then apply several thin coats of joint compound over it sanding in between. An old trick is to pack the hole with newspaper, then apply joint compound over as mentioned. You can make a drywall patch. Cut the hole to a square cut a piece of drywall to the same size. Put a piece of scrap wood behind the drywall and screw to the sides of the hole. Put the patch in place and screw to backer. Use joint tape over the seams and joint compound as mentioned.

The metal patch will be the easiest. Get it at the big box store in the paint section.
