This is an intesting question.... An easy answer would suggest that a person's salary be the same, regardless of gender. However, take another look at the question - In my opinion the key word here is "required".

Companies have enough regulations that they must adhere to. Why impose requirements? Imagine the nightmare of auditing everyone's salaries. What if you found out that your co-worker (opposite gender) was making $10,000 more than you? Would you file a grievance? Are you in a union? Do you have the same level of education and experience? What gives?

A person's salary should be based on education, experience, communication skills (verbally and written), past accomplishments, motivation, and future potential. Forget about gender, this is 2007 - not 1950.

Good luck to you and your friend - - I hope this helps "open your mind!" Get an "A" - - stay in school, go to college, stay clean and stay out of trouble.

Have you tried looking in to Title IX? It's basically the supreme court's answer to this question. It requires equal pay for female workers and equal funding for female programs. Check your library for books about it. I did a paper about this in high school but it's been so long (about 5 years) that I've forgotten my points.

You may also want to check on the legislation that makes provisions for maternity leave and equal opportunity hiring.

no, who would regulate how companies pay their own employees? salary information is usually not public information and competitive wages are normally based on experience or tenure - how long an employee has been working at that job.

if anything companies should be required to pay the most qualified and proven employee the most competitive wage.

They should have the same or equivalent educational backgrounds and same/equivalent experience.

You cannot justify paying someone more or less based solely on their gender! :)

Good luck! :)
