I learned in a BMW 325i automatic and yes automatics are way easier to pass the test in because you have less to focus on doing and more to focus on the road.

i learnt in a vauxhall corsa and i wouldn't recommend learning in an automatic...i didn't find picking up how to use the gears hard, what is hard is driving on the roads...learning what to do stuff which doesn't really make a diff what car your in if that makes sense! if you learn in an automatic you will only have a licence to drive automatic vehicles and this might become problematic in a number of circumstances in the future... borrowing friends cars? the business' car? Honestly learn in a manual

I learned in a 1963 VW, if you can drive that you can drive anything!! It was a stick shift...learned on that first and then I learned to drive an automatic in a 1968 Plymouth fury station wagon...it was the size of a bus. I would recommend learning both...the automatic is much easier, but you never know when you might have to drive standard.

don't take the automatic test!!! you will obviously only be able to drive an automatic which to me is a waste of your time and effort. you feel more involved in the driving process when driving a normal car, plus its way more fun. i was 24 when i started learning to drive so i can understand when you say you want to pass quickly, it only took me 4 months to learn and pass, i too contemplated taking the automatic test but was strongly advised not to, so here i am passing on the good advice given to me.

Test on the automatic for sure. My son just took his test last June. He learned on an automatic but the car he bought was 5-speed. He had to drive my car until he learned to drive his. It took him a month or so before he was comfortable enuf to drive it alone. He almost gave up a few times due to poor teaching. :)

I learnt to drive in a Nissan Micra, I then got a Punto, and prefered the Punto.
As the others have said don't waste your time learning to drive an automatic, it will limit you in the future, and the number of cars you can buy. The gears are easy when you get used to them, they become 2nd nature.

I tried to learn to drive at 21 in a Nissan micra manual, then stopped for 5 years, then learnt to drive properly in a BMW 320. I should never have waited five years, but better late than never.
I enjoyed learning to drive in a manual, listening for the gear change in the beginning was new, and now changing gears and using the clutch, is second nature, as it will be to you, if you choose to learn manual.
I have to say this, it is one of the best accomplishments you can give yourself, the freedom and independence it allows you, you will wonder how you ever managed without your license.
Get yourself a decent instructor, and don't be afraid to change them if you don't get along, because getting along with them is important, and helps you to progress.
I wouldn't advise you learning to drive with a family member, untill you have captured the rudimentary basics. then a family/friend can, once your insured sit next to you, while you continue to practise.
But go ahead, it's fun learning a new skill. and this you can use worldwide.

I would learn in a manual, because if you pass in an automatic you cannot drive a manual until you have the passed the test in manual. But up to you.

I passed my test 14 years ago and had to learn in a little Citroen AX ..... The bloody thing was a death trap and to this day I still don't know how I got through my test!!
It might have had something to do with the fact that I was stuck at a level crossing in Goole for 25 minutes I guess !! lol

I was taught how to drive in a Chevy Astrovan. It was a lil' harder because it was larger than a normal car. But, my first car was an 88 toyota corolla. It was a great lil' car. It got me around just fine and it was old so it was ok I beat it up a little bit. You'll definetly want to use an automatic. They are easier to drive.
Good luck and hope this helps!!
