The consensus seems to be Walter Payton and I have to agree, he was the most complete running back of all-time, he did it all run, catch, block, pass, was as durable as they come and the consummate team leader.

It's either Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Ladainian Tomlinson, Eric Dickerson, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Jerome Bettis, or Marshall Faulk.

I have to say I was surprised to see so many people say Walter Payton not a bad pick but how could anyone not say Jim Brown he never missed a game because of injuries he only palyed 12 game seasons and everyone in the stadium knew he was going to get the ball he was big and fast and strong and he still has records that have not been broken and I love a lot of running backs Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell Erick Dickerson O.J Simpson Billy Sims just to name a few they all have there place in our hearts because they layed it all on the line when they played

Considering some of horrible Bears teams he had to endure I would have to say Walter Payton. If Payton would have had the line Emmitt Smith did in Dallas, Walter would still be the all time rushing leader. Barry Sanders would have to be my second choice. Wished he had finished playing out his career.

There have been plenty of great running backs, but the best would have to be either Barry Sanders or James Brown. I think Eric Dickerson was really good too, but he's not in the same league as those two.

Nobody mentioned OJ Simpson and regardless of him being a murderer, he was one of the best RB's of all time. Eric Dickerson was also excellent though he screwed himself with the constant bickering with management, otherwise he might haved surpassed Walters numbers. Still I would say Payton was the best.

I think it would have been Barry Sanders if he played through his prime.. But Currently I would have to say Walter Peyton, but Tomlinson barring injuries will be by the time he retires.

Walter Payton took a beating on some terrible teams.
Like Barry Sanders, but he wasn't known for having to grind it out.
