I get paid? I have also heard that finding a licensed appraiser to sponsor me through my training is very difficult. Is that the case?

As an appraiser here is some advice to help you along the way. First obtaining your hours is very difficult due to the fact most firms do not like to take on trainees. It takes alot of time to train someone. My first word of advice is to take your appraisal classes with the Appraisal Institute their website is www.appraisalinstitute.org. They have the best education and you will meet other appraisers in the business that can help you along the way. Also, you can join the local chapter and see job opportunities on the website. There are three tiers of appraisal certifications first is the Licensed Residential, Certified Residential and Certified General. All three have there specific requirements and require a certain number of classroom hours and experience hours and time frame. As of 1/1/08 there will be drastic changes to the requirements for certified residential and general appraisers. They will require a certain number of college credits, classroom hours and new state tests. I would try and take the classes first and pass the state test before they make the changes. During your training period you do get paid. The 2,000 hours of experience are only for Licensed Residential Appraisers and cannot be obtained in under 2 years. The other certifications require more hours 2,500 and I believe in 2.5 years. You should go to your state's licensing department to check out the specific requirements.

Those answers depend on where you're at. Ask a local appraiser. One tip that I can give you is go to your local For Sale By Owner office if you have one, or call and see if they know of any appriasers they can recommend to help you out and answer questions.
