The difference between the two parties can best be seen in the topics of how to pay for the government, what the government owes to it's citizens, and how to handle commerce.

The republican party (traditional) likes to keep the cost of government as low as possible. They would prefer that many services the government is now providing would be provided by businesses and charitable organizations.

The republican party believes that citizens should be self-reliant and suffer the consequences of their own lack of foresight and keep the benefits of their own work.

The republican party believes that the market will provide best for the needs of the country and the more it is left alone, the better it will run.

Its hard to say because not every replublican considers them a part of the party for the same reason. The simplest answer would be that agree more with the republican party's priorities and policies more than the democrats or any other party for that matter. You could ask a 1000 republicans, or followers to any other party, what it means to be member of their party and get 1000 different answers.

A better question would be "What does it mean to be a Conservative?" That is different from a Republican.

You're going to get a bunch of dumb answers. If you want to know what a party stands for, look at it's leaders. They're the ones defining the parties.
