If you're from a poor background, you probably have better budgeting skills than most kids starting college. Buy only the essentials...avoid eating out or ordering pizza (a big college temptation). Well, I'm not going to tell you how to budget..like I said, you already know..

Now, if you absolutely do not have the cash to buy essentials...
Most thrift stores are outreach centers also. Speak to a thrift store manager about your situation and they might can give you a few things or a few dollars to help out.
The local Department of Social Services can be a resource. See what programs you qualify for through them, and they might have supplies to give you in a pinch.
Church. If you are religiously inclined, attend and become a member of a church. Whenever you have trouble, your church family help out. If you're really desperate, you can ask churches for help, even if you aren't a member. If you show up asking for essentials to live on, they'll usually help you out.

Best of luck in college!! Please don't let financial worry ruin your college experience. Just make sound and smart decisions about your money and you'll be fine!

How shoestring is shoestring? Where will your cash be coming from, family support or a job? I had a job all throughout college. While I could have used better financial management skills in general, the money was key to survival.

#1. Live in a dorm. They pay the power bill, normally give you free cable, and you will be in walking distance from everything you need.
#2. Personal stuff: Buy cheap brands of shampoo, deo..etc. You can even brush your teeth with baking soda if needed. There are some washable feminine products out on the market if you get that desperate.
#3. Ask your professors if you can work for them. Many students are afraid to ask, but there are many on campus jobs that are not advertised. I landed one of these during my senior year. It boosted my resume as well as paying the bills.

See your college counselor about financial aid. Take out a student loan. try to get scholarships or grants. Dont go to college yet and work for awhile until you are finacially stable. Hope at least one helped.

Most colleges will have a health specialist. You can get free stuff from them. You can always go to a $1 store and get some stuff very very cheap.

you have to think of some ways you can earn extra $. going to college may not be a good idea for you for now. besides sinking yourself into debt before you can even get a job is never a good idea. use your common sense!
