What's wrong with UK fast food staff?

When we were abroad, the spanish guy in burger King understood our order 100% and we got exactly what we asked for. I got to maccy's in harperhey, manchester or oldham, and i get either 'we dont do a double cheese burger meal" (so give me the burger, fries and drink then, duh!) or we get completely the wrong thing/told we didnt order the right thing or completely done over with the change. Are we as a nation, just thick?
