I'm from Argentina, I'm learning English and I don't understand the different kind of rock music that exist such as progressive, hard, etc. What are the differences among them? Thanks.

Queen's considered glam rock
Pink Floyd started out as psychedelia and Brit pop under the leadership of Syd Barrett and after he left, they moved on to progressive under the leadership of Roger Rogers and david Gilmour left it that way when Waters left.

Pink Floyd and Queen are both considered classic rock. Most rock music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s is considered "classic" and Queen and Pink Floyd both fit that description.

Rock and roll is comprised of many different sub-genres. Rock and roll was orginionally influenced by artists who dug the blues in the 50s and the 60s, but rock and roll really took off Elvis came around, and the Beatles. Hard rock and heavy metal came about in the 70s with the likes of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Punk rock also came alive in the 70s. The 80s had "hair metal" with a lot of bands where the style was to have big hairdos and mullets, and bands mostly liked to party and sing about it. The 80s also saw the rise of U2, a big pop/rock band from Ireland who have had a long and very successful career.

The 80s also had an alternative rock scene that for the most part was underground. Bands like Soundgarden Nirvana, Alice in Chains where making their mark in Seattle Washington. Other bands like Stone Temple Pilots where getting their start in southern California, and the Smashing Pumpkins in Chicago during the late 80s and early 90s.

The alternative scene came into play where Nirvana broke on the mainstream with their song "Smells like Teen Spirit" that became very popular with a younger generation of rock music listeners in the early 90s, and basically killed off the popularity for many 80s hair metal bands.

And basically you can attribute the sound of rock music to day feeding off of a strong influence from 90s bands as part of the rise of "alternative rock."

There are a lot of EMO bands today, (overly emotional music). EMO is one of the latest genres of rock music, but there are a lot of new bands today that don't fit the description of EMO, and are simply just considered "rock" bands.

Pink Floyd was more progressive rock. They had a lot of sweet guitar solos, and their songs had a lot of musical parts and less singing. Queen was hard rock, which means that they were a little more hard-core. They had louder and more confusing rock (but still amazingly great) music.

I would say Queen were a rock band, Pink Floyd were more a heavy metal rock band. Queen are more commercial - in other words they make more saleable music, attractive to more people. I would say that Pink Floyd were more specialist musicians and have more a cult following than a general following. Pink Floyd are more for listening to at home and enjoying the skill of the musicians, Queen are more for dancing etc. This is just my opinion though and Brian May is an excellent guitarist - its often just a matter of taste and also completely different eras...

Bueno, te cuento. Ambos Queen y Pink Floyd seguian Rock and Roll.
