She was probably reliving it in visual imagery and re-experienccing the emotions. Maybe she was trying not to cry by not making eye contact if she was talking about something emotional.

She is either being overly dramatic, or she takes the subject very seriously and the incident has made an impression on her. I'd suggest taking her seriously unless she tends to be dramatic. You could very solemnly ask her what made her feel so serious about the event, and remember to listen well. Don't be afraid to ask about it, but be receptive to any indications that she's uncomfortable talking about it. If she is, she just may need time to think of how to explain, so be patient.

More than likely, she was telling you the truth. By staring into distance, and change of voice, indicates she was remembering the event and telling you as she visualized it.

She's probably trying not to get emotional as she tells this, so maybe that's why she's not making eye contact. It's probably a memory flooding in that made her sound so grave.
