The charging of lithium-ion batteries is handled by a charge controller in the device. The controller tries to estimate the remaining charge in the battery and sets the charging rate accordingly. Once in a while, the controller will get mixed up about how much charge is left in the battery. I have heard that if you let the pattery charg for a long time (like overnight) it can recalibrate the battery controller.
