Hi! Here is my situation: I have a four month old boy (my first). I am engaged to his father and we live together, but we both work the night shift (12:30 am - 8:30 am). There's not much I can do about my job right now, but I'm thinking about future possibilities. My fiance sleeps the first 5 hours of the day time, I sleep the second 5 and while we work, the baby stays over one of his grandparents' houses.

I guess I have a couple of concerns with this, first, I worry that my baby will confuse me and his two grandmothers, since he is constantly sleeping in a different house, or that he will forget who I am since I can't sleep at night when he sleeps and I feel that I should be spending more time with him.

Second, there are times when I would love to take a nap on the couch while my son plays on the floor next to me, but I worry that I'm not keeping him entertained enough or that he's not learning enough. Do you think I should be concerned? Thank you!

I think that you can only go so long on 5 hours of sleep while working a full time job and caring for a baby!!! Baby knows who you are dont worry about that too much. At this age esp. they respond well to whomever has them if that person loves them.
I really think I would look for a job that had me on the day shift-so you stay on the baby's schedule and this would be better in the longer run, this would be better (if grandparents will still watch the baby its perfect). Then you and your family can be together in the evening before your guy goes to work.
Napping while baby is up and on the floor is dangerous-if you must rest at least put baby in a play pen or bed with some toys.

My main advice is to make sure that you have an "exersaucer." This wonderful gadget provided my little girl with hours of entertainment. Some models will let you change out the toys if the baby doesn't like them or gets bored with them. Plus, if you were to nod off, the baby can't move or escape. Don't stress out about entertaining your child, watching leaves fall is exciting to a baby. Baby Einstein has some videos that can provide visual and auditory stimulation. My daughter loved Mozart and Bach.

You need to get another job. Your child comes first and he needs you right now. If you work all night you can't have a lot of energy to play with him during the day.

One of you needs to get a differnt shift or a different job. That baby needs stability.
