There's no answer to this question! Rugby league only came about because of a split between northern and southern english rugby union clubs (over the payment of players).

In 1895, a group of 22 clubs from the north broke away and formed their own league. So I suppose all of these clubs were the first.

Incidentally, the first of these clubs to have been founded (as a rugby union club) was Bradford in 1863.

not debating any answers but it's always amazed me that teams claim to be "the first team" of any sport. Go on then, who did they play against before the second team showed up? Were they the first ones to the ground on the day? Were tey the winners, or was there an "a" team and a "b" team?
