Fill the 5 gallon and pour it into the 3. Now you have a full 3 gallon and 2 gallons left in the 5.

Empty the 3 gallon and pour the 2 gallons from the 5 into the 3 gallon. Now you have 2 gallons in the 3 and an empty 5.

Fill the 5 gallon and fill the rest of the 3 gallon. That will leave four gallons in the 5 gallon bucket.

OR

Fill the the 3 gallon bucket and pour it into the 5 gallon - Now you have 3 gallons in the 5 and the 3 is empty.

Refill the 3 gallon bucket and fill the rest of the 5 gallon bucket. Now you have 5 gallons in the 5 and 1 gallon left in the 3 gallon.

Empty the 5 gallon bucket (You can't do this trick without discarding some water at some point). Now you have 1 gallon in the 3 gallon bucket and none in the 5.

Pour the one gallon in the 5. Now you have an empty 3 gallon and 1 gallon of water in the 5 gallon bucket.

Fill the 3 gallon bucket and pour it into the 5. Now you have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket.
