Power: He reigned for 30 years and started two wars - Iran (1980) and Kuwait (1990).
Iran War: Was backed by the US, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and France.
Chemical Weapons: He gassed the Kurds and Iranians in the 1980's, during US support, and the US provided him the satellite imagery he needed to do so. (The US used fire and nuclear bombs against Japanese civilians).
WMD: There were none, and when he DID have them in the Gulf war, he didnt use them against the US.
Nuclear Arsenal: The US was able to wage Desert Storm II against a nuclear armed Saddam without nuclear war.
AL Quaeda - No link, except that Bin Laden is a radical fundamentalist who detests secular leaders like Saddam.
Killing Babies: Nayirah, the girl who testified to babies being torn out of incubators in Kuwait by Saddams army, turned out to be the daughter of a US Kuwaiti ambassador and grew up in New York City.

Not only could he be contained, he was being contained. He had no capabilities whatsoever to do anything to the outside world. He was a tyrant, no doubt. But, the US has supported people who are just as bad, if not worse than him. Kuwait's government is one of the most ruthless governments in the world. At one time, the US supported Osama bin Laden. Saudi Arabia has a record of human rights violations.

Saddam was evil. Semi-rational but not totally irrational was he. He had been contained in the Middle East for all the time he was in power. That part of the world has a way of dealing with its own problems. They have had 3 thousand years of practice. Persia and Babylon back and forth.
We helped both sides gain much of the weaponry they have. Had we butted out years ago maybe the perceived threat would be much less.

Just plan arrogant made to be a scapegoat. ( You forgot the phone call from Hussein to Bush 41 before he invaded Kuwait. Where Bush promised to remain neutral). But certainly evil for gassing the Kurds and killing of political foes.

You forgot to add that after the Kuwaiti War, sanctions were in place that kept him from exploring/developing bio/nuke weapons programs.
He was contained, and the Shea, Sunni, and Kurds at the time were not involuntarily in the middle of a civil war either.

Evil is a non secular concept, besides the shown fact that it grew to become into surely Stalins u.s. that murdered directly and in a roundabout way the main folk, observed via Moas China, nonetheless in historic previous the two the Slave commerce and the genocide of the North and South American Indians pales even Stalin and Mao's tally to slaughter. Its thrilling you incorporate Bin encumbered, on the muder scale of one million-10 he in all risk are available at 0.001 way in the back of conflict mongers including Bush, Blair or maybe Putin. He may well be in a similar league because of the fact the likes of Israel's Sharon, yet purely purely !

He was a stupid and selfish person actualy....who never used his brain to take the decisions........His wars are the example of it..he was puppet for US who used him and he obeyed its order for keeping his power and hold in Iraq and as usual when his job was over i.e to let US in in iraq he was executed ! I m sorry but whatever he was......it was because of US.whether good or bad.....he is responsible for the destruction of Iraq and i can say that he has betrayed his nation !and let them burn in fire now ! I did cry to see his execution but i agree that he is a person who has made the worse mistakes during his leadership and now his nation is paying for his mistake, ...his worse mistake was to take US as his friend !If US is responsible for deserted Iraq of today , Saddam should be blamed first !

If he was still there then Iran would not get out of line.
Unfortunately he was a psychopath and is now rotting in hell along with every single suicide bomber.

He was certainly evil and irrational. Perhaps he could have been contained, but if his sons had inherited his position I doubt if they could have been.
