The problem is that the Wii is downstairs in the backroom of the house and the PC is upstairs on the front of the house.

I was looking at the USB dongles but cant find the range and not sure of the range.

Anyone got any advice to help me out on how best (and cheaply) to set up and use wi-fi over a distance?

Wi-Fi can work through an entire house. Buy one of the nice, expensive wireless routers with range extender or a similar feature. If you set it up near your PC, your new wifi network should still reach the Wii.

WiFi is nothing but radio waves, and if you think of it like having a radio, you'll get the right idea. So long as nothing like heavy-duty electronics or three feet of lead is between your Wii & your WiFi device, you're clear.

How do I know? Well, it uses the same communication settings as a DS, and my friends and I have been down the block playing Mario Kart DS at around 100 feet, with a clear line of sight. It won't go through heavy brick, places with massive interference [microwaves, 3+ computers in one room, live wires].

You can pick a cheapo if you're within 30 feet of the Wii, but any further then that and you'll need an extender, a WiFi 'megaphone' or just moving the Wii. Or you can spend $40 more and get a dang nice WiFi device.

our wii is in the living room and our PC is in our office...not a problem we thought...so we bought the Wii Wi-Fi and it didn't work...we went to Best Buy and bought the Linksys speed booster and went wireless for our internet connection...its even faster then normal DSL & Cable...the Wii works fine now
