It depends what culture you are talking about. In European cultures it was a monster, sometimes a symbol of power. Other cultures, in Asia, thought that some were monsters and others were nice and controled the forces of nature. They were also symbols of power. A dragon is real if you believe in it, but if you don't for you it is not real. Many dragons look the same because people are people and have base instincts to fear the same things, a dragon is all of those things put together.
