I am fine. I just got laid off. Today is my last day and I have no idea what I am going to do.

In music, the word "fine" means "the end."
But as an answer to a greeting, there are many replies a person can make other than to say "I'm fine".
ie: I'm pretty good, I'm o.k., It's a great day, I'm not as fine as I'd like to be, etc.

Well, I AM fine so I can say it, if I wasn't fine, and someone asked me how I was doing, I'd say, "eh, so-so" or something to that effect.
