does anyone know of a compact florescent bulb that will work with recessed lighting on a timer.

It is true that the manufacturers of the compact fluorescents (PL's) state on the packaging to NOT use them on timer circuits but I've never understood why that would be an issue. A switch is a switch is a switch. They are used all the time in commercial installations where entire zones of lighting are controlled by timers and/or relayed contactors. I suspect the manufacturers are just covering their butts on warranty issues (PL's still have a high rate of premature failure.)

BTW, you CAN now buy certain PL bulbs now that work on dimmers (though they are still a bit pricey.)

I don't see why a regular compact florescent won't work. I have 46 of them in my outside lighting here at work. They are all on a timer and they work just fine. They are in recessed cans.

Any bulb will work on a timer it is just a auto on / off switch
The only thing you cant use on those bulbs are dimmers
