An electrolyte is a substance either in liquid or molten form which allows the passage of an electric current. In addition it results in substances being given off at the anode and cathode, usually for positive benefit. An example is hydrogen given off at cathode and oxygen at the anode when electricity is passed through water to which a small amount of sulphuric acid has been added.
