I have three children and pets as well, this is what seems to work for my household. Get a spray bottle and mix a 50/50 solution of distilled vinegar and water, this will kill spiders and ants and will with regular use limit them coming back. The best parts about this remedy is that it's cheap and non-toxic to your kids and pets. Good luck, I hope this solution works for you as it does for me.

skin so soft is a product made by avon, non toxic to pets and kids, put a little on a cotton ball and rub it along all the places the ants are coing in from, it creates a barrier that they will not cross for months...I live in a very ant infested area and do not have an ant problem b/c I use this method. I have recommended it to many others with great success.

mix up a tsp of icing sugar and1/2 tsp of baking soda dry and put this powder in the ants trails. They will find it and take this food back to their queen in the nest. Soon no more ants. The baking soda would have been picked up as well and does not do good in the nest.
Using baking soda alone won't do anything cause there is no sugar(food) value in it and that is what they are looking for. I have tried table sugar, - it does not work as fast, probably because the crystals are much larger than the icing sugar.
It works and is safe

I second whoever said to mix 50/50 vinegar and water. Wipe your counters with this to at least keep the ants away from your food. And you can obviously spray it around anywhere else to keep the ants out too. This worked at my house - the ants don't even come back at all anymore.

I don't know why but ants won't cross a line of chalk. So if you know where they are coming in, you could put some chalk down. I had a hummingbird feeder that the ants would get to so I put chalk around the hanger and they didn't cross it. Eventually they gave up trying. Of course, you need to reapply it regularly.

Outside the house, use a product called Diazinon. You just go around the proximity of the house with the granules. I had ants in my house, and used the diazinon. They will not come in anymore. It worked great-I spread some every spring. Hope this helps

well you could try first to see where they are coming from . then once you know put lot´s of black pepper around and in the hole , they well then carry this into the tunnel and achoo. They will be gone in no time at all . at least you are not putting chemical´s and if you can seal of the area the children and pets will come to no harm

Mix borax and icing sugar and sprinkle it on their nests. Also, take a bar of soap and draw an unbroken line across all paths to the inside of your house. They won't cross the soap line.
