Our church is having a supper on Holy Thursday. I'm looking for creative ideas for centerpieces for the tables.

If you are having a sater on Holy Thursday, you are still in the lenten season, technically, so you souldn't want to do anything flowery, like lillies. Why not try something with stones. Our church has some really lovely altarpieces for Lent with rocks and funky twigs. I've seen them in the craft store, I believe they are grape vines. You could put them in a vase, thr rocks on the bottom, and the twigs coming out, like flowers, and then scatter some additional stones along the center of the table. That would be very pretty, and given the liturgical season, very appropriate. Happy Easter!

I'm thinking of two combinable themes:

1) Lamb: I've often made Easter bonnets that have the theme of a lamb and bread and wine, or wheat and grapes. Buy a stuffed lamb and put it in the center of a plate or basket. Surround it with plastic grapes--white/green, purple, and red--and plastic or actual wheat, which you might find in a florist shop or craft shop. This motif will make people think of Holy Communion and of Jesus as the sacrificial Lamb. If you can't find wheat, you can use bread, crackers, matzoh, etc., either the real thing or plastic bread or crackers from a craft store. You could also use wine bottles or goblets with, or instead of, grapes.

2) Passover: arrange a Seder plate, explaing that the Last Supper, which Holy Thursday commemorates, was most likely a Passover seder. You can go to a website about Passover that explains the make-up of a seder.

Combining the two ideas, you can have a stuffed lamb with a seder plate in front of it, or the stuffed lamb in the place of the lamb shank on the seder plate.

BTW, on my refrigerator, instead of a cross, I have two magnets--a bag of French bread and a bottle of wine--representing the Body and Blood of Christ. Previously I had magnets of a Ritz cracker and a bunch of grapes, but those two items are on the side of my refrigerator now.

Here is a site that has cutouts you could use for centerpieces. They would also be reusable. Insert each one in a disk of Styrofoam and cover the base with purple Easter grass. Quite inexpensive, and yet attractive.

Perhaps something with baby lambs? Easter always reminds of spring with the newborn lambs being born, and lambs are symbolic for Christian followers.
