I recently had a 1997 Geo Metro given to me. I had to learn how to drive a manual transmission from scratch. Needless to say, I haven't driven it very much yet. Yesterday, I accidentally drove with the emergency brake on for 5 minutes or so. I immediately shut it off when I realized it, and the car wasn't doing anything strange. I went to the grocery store and came back home with no problems using the emergency brake to secure my parking. Now today the brake is stuck in the air and will not go down to shut off no matter how hard I press down. Did I seriously screw something up? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

First thing to try is to push the button and hold it, and yank up on the lever, this may break it loose and allow it to go down.

If not, then have a friend take a look and see if he or she can find out where its hung up. If all this fails, then you'll need to call someone and get them to repair the damage.

Sounds like you might've damaged the parking brake. Fortunately, Geos are tiny little cars that don't weigh much. I'm not sure how it works with those cars, but with my pickup truck, if I put it into first gear and then kill the engine, the truck won't roll - so my first gear is also my park gear (when the engine is off).

If yours is similar, then I just wouldn't worry about the parking brake. :)
