I own & work at a bar. Alcohol is a depressent & it effects some people worse than others. I feel like a priest sometimes because I hear more sad & tragic stories from people drinking than I probably should that normally wouldn't mention if not for drinking. Not to mention the fights that gets started too.

A lot of people drink to drown their sorrows in the first place. Alcohol doesn't necessarily makes people sad though, just less inhibited about what they were already feeling.
Yeah, yeah, everybody says that alcohol is a depressant. That's medically true, but it doesn't mean what you think it means. If alcohol makes people depressed then why do they drink it to loosen up and have fun?
My favorite quote from a movie: this old doctor is giving John Wayne some advice. he says "For some people, alcohol is a depressant, for others a stimulant; for still others it is an anodyne. Right now, I am using it as an anodyne." lol.

Alcohol is a depressant. That's why people become very sad when they drink. I don't think you will find anybody that happy who drink a lot, no matter how expensive the bar.

What are you people talking about? I get very jolly and good natured when I drink. Maybe they go to the wrong places to drink? Maybe they drink the wrong kind of drinks? Maybe they are depressed to begin with? Actually, I think that's why. Question answered... now where's my 10 points? And no ... I'm not drinking right now!

because when ou are under the inflence of alcohol it gives you the courage to say and think about things you wouldn't when you are sober and it gives you the courage to discuss your feelings w/ others. It is a depressant that makes you feel 10 times worse about a situation then you should.

Many people drink to forget what ever gets them bummed out in the first place. Unfortunately, the only thing you forget when drinking is that it's a depressant.

They were probably drinking because of said sad stuff. If they were already happy, there's a good chance they'd find something better to do.
