Basically, an employee has no right to privacy when using company-owned equipment - such as phones and computers

You simply state what the policy is, that you reserve the right to audit the equipment, that certain use of computers is strictly forbidden - chain letters, harrassment, porn, etc. Note that failure to follow IT policy is subject to sanction, up to and including termination of employment.

Most places I've worked don't have the time or equipment to spy on employees. Some feel that it is necessary. Generally, if it's obvious that an employee isn't doing a lot of work, they can pretty simply start turrning on logging on the firewall, and build the case for this person to go.

It is as simple as using their phones and computers. Anywhere from tracking your web useto listing all the numbers called and vice versa. Any questionnable use of these devices or resources while on a business time or network, can lead up to and include dismissal. There can be logging, tracking, even witnessing to determine if you are in the wrong. There can be a ton fo forms to fill out just to protect information, and the added procedures, which in the long run take up valuable time and become tedious.

Well, it sure should not invade your privacy by no means. They can give you drug test, and run background checks. In some states they can forbid you to smoke(insurance purposes). When it comes to companies protecting there information, when you get hired you've probably signed something that promises you will not share any information with any other organization. If you do your breaking the law, and could result to jail time.
