Asbestos started being banned from buildings in 1969 but continued to be used until at least the mid-80s. Any building built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos so you may well be right to ask. In fact since May 2004 all building managers or owners must have have their premises surveyed for asbestos.

So:

- If you are just renting, ask your landlord or his agent.

- If you are the owner, first learn the basics on www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos, then look for an asbestos inspection company on www.arcaweb.org.uk

Note that asbestos panels in good condition may well be left in place.

Cheers!

Phone your council and ask them to come and check if you have any suspicion that their might be asbestos around. Better you do not go digging around yourself as they can come dressed protectively for the job.

When was your house built? Asbestos was banned in buildings in the 1970's. If it was built after that, you should be fine.
