Ancient Rome. It was literally the first attempt at a modern society, with a market economy, stable government with checks and balances, and an unmatched technological prowess.

Its decline into fascism and eventual dissolution is a sad reminder of the fragility of freedom and prosperity, and a chilling reminder of what might happen to us.

Feudal Japan is the most interesting time/place to me. the rule of Bushido, samurai, ninja (true ninjas not the crap portrayed as ninjas now) it all has a draw to me
