Iran isn't technically getting away with holding the 15 Brits. As of right now, there are negotiations going on. Depending on how they pan out will we see closure on this issue.

They wouldn't have been in the area if it wasn't for Iraq. So I assume the Dems will shortly begin blaming Bush.
No, Iran would not get away with holding them. Brittian has a harder stance on Iran then we do at times.

They are seperate issues. Iran is looking for any leverage they can use to improve their position regarding sanctions imposed by the UN. The powers that be in Iran are risking war to insure that they can continue to prepare for war. It is a dangerous game with no possible good outcome.

They captured and held Americans for 444 days and we weren't in Iraq. In fact the President of Iran was one of the hostage takers then

What does the US being in Iraq have to do with it?
Iran supposedly hijacked this boat and kidnapped the sailors.
Now Britain has to jump through the diplomatic hoops before they lob some bombs on Tehran.

Of course, They got away with holding dozens of Americans 30 years ago for over a year.
At least now they know that there is a good chance they are going to pay the ultimate price.
