thought there are torturers in the world
there are also musicians

though at this moment, men
are screaming in prisons
there are jazz men raising storms
of sensuous celebration
and orchestras releasing
glories of the spirit

though an image of god
is everywhere defiled
a man in west clare
is playing the concertina
the sistine choir is levitating
under the dome of saint peters
and a drunk man on the road
is singing for no reason

pppppppllllllllllleeeeeeaaaaaaaaasssssssseeeeee help!!!

This poem is a symbol of the good/evil in humans. Nobody is perfect and no one is pure evil (musicians/torturers). It is the struggle in ourselves to do the right thing, and even if we don't we should know that we do have good traits. It can also be taken as a perspective of life. There will be bad times in life, but there will also be happy times. In other words,

CHIN UP!!

This poem is talking about the power of music. Even though bad things are happening all over the world, there is also music which makes things OK. If you are writing an analytical paper on this subject, make sure to include the term melopoeia for extra bonus points!

It's an old theme, as old as Nero fiddling while Rome burned. There are horrors going on in the world and there are those oblivious to what is happening.

The "them" are the victims or those who are insensitive to their plight, depending on your point of view.

theme: the triumph of music in spite of.....

you have the harsh realities of life which may bring sorrow, and then you have the music that is played in opposition of all of that, and despite all of that... i suppose it's illustrating the multiple facets of life through opposites like happiness and sorrow, desecration and consecration, desolation and inspiration.. all of this with the harsh realities of life being the reality and music being a celebration despite this reality...

Like every poem, it's about sex (jazz) and death/discomfort.
