i live in MN and the ground is just starting to thaw. when would be a good time to plant? do they make a fast growing grass seed???

Grass takes 7-14 days to germinate. Early spring is a good time to put down grass seed so it get the spring rains that need to germinate it. If available use a starter fertilizer to help in growing it. Make sure the ground where to seed is always damp or moist to help germination.

It depends on the type.

Usually, you should mix annual ryegrass which comes up quick, with a perennial which comes up slow but last for years.

I am in NC, and the County offices have a display of grass, usually several types, and you can see what they look like all year round. So you might check with your county agent.

sod takes hold much quicker and grows immediately.
