Most of the United State of America is switching to flex time, and telecommuting as much as possible.

So it depends on the job.

People put in long hours from home and never go to their office, if they have one. There are 7 time zones for the country and when you talk about Global participation you can have 24 time zones.

All other answers are good.

Labour law considers 40 hour week but it applies to certain type of employment only. Main or fist sift is a day time sift, second shift starts in the afternoon, third shift is shorter and may start at any time after evening hours say 7:00pm. Two 10 minute to 15 minutes break and 30 minutes lunch or dinner extends the day at work to 9:00 hour, for the two shifts, but work day is as a rule 7 1/2 to 8 hours. Most places have over laps so transition is smooth between change over of shift workers.

USA generally follows 5 day week i.e from Monday to Friday. People give lot of importance to socialising and spending quality time with their families in USA. Due to this they have a very disciplined work schedule. People tend to reach work by 8 am (some by 9 am) and leave back by 5 pm (some by 6 pm), so that they can spend time with their families or persuing their interests in life.

The above is general norm for most people. But, obviously there are exceptions like in most countries and here depending on the type of company, a call needs to be made on the ideal work timing.

Some businesses run their work week from Sunday through Saturday and other run it from Monday through Sunday. This varies by business.

Common business working hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 8:30 to 5 p.m. (30 minutes for lunch) or 8 to 5 p.m. (1 hour for lunch). Some retail businesses work from 10 to 6. Some customer service ("call center") facitilies run longer hours such as 6 a.m. to midnight or "around the clock" (a full 24 hours). Mass retailers and pharmacies (Wal-mart, Walgreens) are also often open 24 hours as are certain manufacturers who have "graveyard" shifts (typically something like 10 pm to 6 am).

I hope this helps!
