The most pervasive theme is slavery, and the effects that it can hold on generations to come. Another theme is "letting go of the past" and how unresolved issues in one's life can come back to haunt us.

That novel is cloaked in metaphor and mystery, but a very interesting read. I posted a link to a site that may help you if you are trying to study this further.

This lovely woman played by Oprah, could not let go of the fact that they had killed her child to keep her from belonging to a white owner.
The child, due to the mother's constant thoughts, returns and consumes all of her mother. The meaning to me, was that the mother had to let go of the "demonic feeling" she felt over the loss of the child. The child needed to be put to rest.

That movie haunts me.
