I think it depends on if your son is a "collector" or just a reader. If he's a collector or plans on collecting, someone should teach him how to handle the comics, paying attention to not bend the spine and pages, etc... If he's just a reader then just about any storage box with maybe some tab markers to alphabetize them should work.
If he plans on collecting, it's wise to invest in a good acid free box like others have mentioned as well as acid free plastic bags for each of the comics. I have comics from when I was 13 years old still in great conditon.

You can buy an acid free storage box from any comic store. They usually are about 4-6 dollars depending on the size of the box (large and small).

Firstly, go to a local comic shop and get bags and boards. They may sell the together, or they may not. Ask them about it. (I suggest the type of bag that has an adhesive strip, so that if you eventually want to seal them, you can.)
Secondly, if your home has space for them, you should look into getting a "long box." Also ask at the comic shop, they should be able to help you out.

buy the baggies at the comic store with the backing boards. each comic gets its own bag. Then put them in the storage boxes and keep them in a nice, safe, dry spot till needed.

my husband collects comics. he went to a comic shop and bought a couple of packs of sleeves, ( to protect the comics). Then he bought a comic box. Its about 2 feet long and the comics stand up inside perfectly. The box is extremely sturdy. so any comic shop would be able to help you and give you advice.

I say the comic box like others above, also keep the box from the sun as the sun will change the colour of any exposed paper.

call a comic book store and ask them how to properly store them so they won't get ruined.

Probably a book shelf because then he can just put them back, and they will be organized.
